Chicago Area Sees Wet Start to the Work Week

The work week will start wet, as rain looks to complicate Monday's morning commute across the Chicago area.

Overcast skies - reducing visibility - will change quickly, turning to spotty showers early Monday as a band of showers moves into the city from southwest portion of the region. [[456119263, C]]

The most concentrated band of rain was moving northwest from the I-80 corridor, near Ottawa, Streator and Dwight early Monday, bringing light to moderate steady rainfall, as well as thunder and gusty winds.

The threat for severe weather wasn't high, and showers were expected to taper off in the late morning.

After a few dry hours in the afternoon, showers and thunderstorms return - this time mostly in the south portion of the region as well as northwest Indiana.

This round of storms brings a small threat of severe weather before residual showers taper off some time between 10 p.m. and midnight. [[455027223, C]]

Overall, the showers and storms are likely to bring a half inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain to the Chicago area before drying out.

The area will also once again see a big spread in temperatures both Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the 50s along the lakefront but reaching upper 60s and even low 70s well inland.

Cloudy but dry conditions were expected Tuesday before a warm-up on Wednesday, with temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s through Thursday.

The heat remains as the rain returns, with the next chance for storms on Friday and through the holiday weekend.
