In a tightly contested race, Representative Cheri Bustos was elected to be the next Chairwoman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Bustos, who was elected to Congress in 2013 from Illinois’ 17th Congressional District, will be responsible for helping the party to defend their majority in the 2020 elections, and she will take over from New Mexico Rep. Ben Ray Lujan.
Bustos is just the second Illinois politician to serve in the role, with former Congressman and current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel having helped Democrats to a massive triumph in the 2006 election cycle.
According to a voting tally reported by Politico, Bustos bested Washington Representatives Suzan DelBene and Denny Heck, with Bustos winning 117 of the 232 votes cast.
Bustos’ name has risen in Democratic circles after she was able to win re-election to her 17th District seat. That district went for President Donald Trump in the 2016 election, but Bustos’ moderate stances helped her to win re-election over Republican Bill Fawell by 53,000 votes.
