A central Illinois college student has won a contest to determine the design of a commemorative coin for the Illinois Bicentennial.
State Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced Monday that the winning design is by 21-year-old Hayden Schumer of Chatham. Chatham is just southwest of Springfield.
Schumer's design was chosen by the public from five finalists. It is called "The First 200." It depicts President Abraham Lincoln, Chicago's Willis Tower, a corn crop, the state Capitol, southern Illinois' national forest and legendary highway Route 66.
The state's transportation history is represented by a steam locomotive. A covered wagon heads toward St. Louis and the great westward expansion.
The coins will cost $45 and may be pre-ordered on the treasurer's website.
Illinois' 200th birthday is Dec. 3.
