Driver Charged in Rogers Park Fatal Hit-And-Run

A 30-year-old Chicago man has been charged with murder and aggravated DUI after fatally striking a woman and critically injuring her 6-year-old son before fleeing the scene Monday night in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

Ralph Eubanks, of the 1400 block of N. Sedgwick, is charged with one count of first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated DUI and two counts of leaving the scene of a fatal accident, police said.

Maria Worthon, of the 1400 block of W. Touhy Ave., was crossing the 7000 block of N. Greenview Avenue with her 6-year-old son and husband when she was struck by Eubanks' Pontiac Grand Prix.  Worthon died at the scene.  The boy remains in the hospital in critical condition.  Worthon's husband, Felix, was unharmed.

Worthon's family said police estimated the hit-and-run car was traveling as fast as 80 mph.

Minutes earlier, police had stopped Eubanks on a traffic violation, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing sources.  He pulled away before the officers could complete the stop, but there was no chase.

The Grand Prix continued south after the crash, but police stopped the vehicle about a mile away and Eubanks was taken into custody, police said.

A bond hearing has been scheduled for Thursday.
