A man died and a woman was injured in a shooting incident near a state park in Channahon Monday afternoon, police said.
The Channahon Police Department said multiple agencies were called to the scene for a report of shots fired just after 1 p.m. near the 25000 block of Fryer Street in the suburb southwest of Chicago.
Multiple 911 calls had also reported a woman was being pistol-whipped at the home not far from the Channahon State Park, authorities said.
Officers called the incident a domestic issue and said they discovered James Darden, 73, shot in the chest at the scene. Darden was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A 53-year-old woman was also found at the scene bleeding from the head and was taken to Saint Josephs Hospital in Joliet. Her condition was not immediately released.
Police said they recovered a weapon from the scene and they are now conducting a death investigation.
Witnesses were in the home at the time of the incident, police said.
Residents were being told to avoid the area for the next three hours, police said. Nearby, a Girl Scout camp had convened in a park, which police say contributed to the heavy response.
The Channahon Police Department said there was "no ongoing threat to the public related to this incident."
