Severe weather rolled over the Chicago area Wednesday night and into Thursday morning as thunderstorms persisted into the overnight hours.
Thunderstorm warnings continued into the early morning hours amid the rush hour commute.
Power outages were widespread in several counties, with more than 11,500 people without power by 6 a.m. Thursday, according to Comed.
A Tornado Warning issued for Ogle, DeKalb, Winnebago and Boone counties expired at about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were also issued for Will, Grundy, Cook, LaSalle, Kendall, Kane, DeKalb and DuPage counties.
The storms were expected to weaken as they moved through the area but brought with them the potential for severe winds and periods of heavy rainfall, which could lead to localized flooding. By Thursday morning, some areas had already seen more than 2 inches of rain.
The storms are expected to end early Thursday morning, with isolated scattered storms possible throughout the day.
Flood Warnings continued Thursday for portions of the Des Plaines and Fox Rivers, where several communities were left under water laster week prompting disaster proclamations for multiple counties.
A Flood Advisory was also issued Kendall, Lake, Will, Kane, DuPage, Cook and Lake counties until 9:15 a.m., warning of minor flooding.
Highs will stay in the upper-80s and low-90s with heat index readings near 100 degrees.
On Friday, the chance for storms returns during the morning hours and again during the afternoon and evening.
The threat continues throughout the weekend.
