6 Injured When Car Crashes Into Front Yard

Five ambulances were called to the 1500 block of North Central Avenue

Six people were injured -- including two children and a pregnant woman -- when a car crash sent vehicle plowing through a fence, across a front yard and crashed into the porch of a northwest side home Wednesday afternoon.

"It was a scary sight," said Otishea Darnell, who was standing at the top of the porch of the house on the 1500 block of North Central Avenue. "I was thinking of my niece and nephew. What if they were right there? What if I had my headphones on and wasn't paying attention?"

Five ambulances responded, ultimately transporting six people to nearby hospitals. Two adults were taken in critical condition to Mt. Sinai Hospital. Four others were taken to John H. Stroger Jr., Hospital of Cook County. Two of them were in critical condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Video from NBC Chicago's helicopter showed the dark-colored vehicle near the front of the home as first responders placed the injured on backboards.

The conditions of all those injured had stabilized by 7:45 p.m., a police spokesperson said.

"The kids had some blood on them, scratches," said witness Bruce Collins of the two 9-year-old children who were transported.

Another witness, Torres Hughes, said the driver of the car looked to be badly injured.

No charges had been filed as of Wednesday evening.
