Robber Armed With Assault Rifle Strikes Twice in 8 Hours

Chicago Police are searching for a man who brandished an assault rifle while robbing numerous people Saturday on the Northwest Side.

The first incident happened about 4:35 p.m. in the 3000 block of North Sawyer and another 8:15 p.m. in the 2600 block of North Elston, according to a community alert from Shakespeare District police.

In one incident, the man fled in the victim's car, police said.

A third incident, which may or may not be related, has been classified as a battery, according to authorities.

The community alert initially said all of the incidents were carjackings, but hours later was corrected to say there were two armed robberies, one of which included the carjacking.

The suspect is described as a man between 25 and 42 years old, standing between 5-foot-11 and 6-foot-4 and weighing about 175 pounds. He was wearing a maroon or burgundy cardigan over a brown polo shirt and gray sweatpants, police said.

In at least one instance, he wore a black baseball cap, and in another, a beige, floppy fishing hat.

Anyone with information should call Area North detectives at (312) 744-8263.
