Toddler Injured After Car Crashes Into Day Care Center on Chicago's South Side

The front-end of the vehicle was seen smashed and part of the building was visibly damaged

A toddler was hospitalized Friday morning after a car slammed into the side of a day care in Chicago's Ashburn neighborhood, police said.

The crash happened at 8:55 a.m. in the 3400 block of West Columbus Drive at Teddy Bear II Day Care Centers.

The Chicago Fire Department said 28 kids were inside the building at the time the vehicle struck, but the owner of the building said only 25 children were inside, three of whom were in the room where the crash happened.

An 18-month-old child was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition after the crash, authorities said.

The driver of the vehicle, 19-year-old Terrence Killings, said he was on his way to work at the car wash next to the day care, and his brakes locked when he tried to stop.

"It was slick outside and I was trying to get to work," he said. "As I made the turn into the car wash my brakes locked up. They did not give my nothing and it went right into the building."

The front end of the vehicle was seen smashed and part of the building was visibly damaged.

"I feel terrible about what happened," Killings said.
