Townhome Collapses in Fire Sparked by Car Crash

Driver of vehicle being treated for hypothermia after being found in a nearby pond

Two townhomes in a Lake County subdivision were deemed uninhabitable after a massive fire sparked when an out-of-control vehicle crashed into the building.

One of the townhomes, on the 400 block of Patriot Drive, in Hainesville, completely collapsed in the fire.

Authorities initially called a "code black," indicating a fatality, but that was later removed. The driver of the car ran from police and was later found in a nearby pond.

The man, who police called a "person of interest," was transported to a hospital and was being treated for hypothermia.

The people inside the home were able to escape without injury. Police said they believe the fire started because the vehicle sheered off the top of a gas main.

Officials said the vehicle that crashed into the building was not stolen but was registered to a woman who lives in Kenosha, Wis.

No charges were filed in the case as of 10:30 a.m.
