Car Crashes Into Suburban Library

A car crashed into a south suburban library early Tuesday, causing extensive damage and likely leaving the facility unable to open amid clean-up and repairs.

An employee at the Blue Island Public Library said he received a call at around 2 a.m. about serious damage to the property.

When he showed up to the library, located in the 2400 block of York Street, he said he came across a mangled mess after a vehicle plowed through the front entrance in the middle of the night.

That employee also said he noticed a small, light-colored sedan that may have been involved was being towed away.

Blue Island police and fire officials did not immediately provide information on the incident but said details would be released later Tuesday morning.

Library employees said it was unlikely that the branch would open its doors at its normally scheduled time of 9 a.m., considering the extent of the damage.

Crews were working Tuesday morning to board up the front entrance, while debris remained scattered along York Street, where the branch has been located since 1970.

It was not immediately clear what would happen with the library's summer programs for children, which include free meals and summer reading.
