1 Dead, 2 Injured in Fiery Crash Involving Taxi

Neighbor calls stretch of Devon Ave. between Milwaukee and Caldwell a "race track"

One person was killed and two others injured in a three-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon near a Northwest Side forest preserve.  One of the vehicles was a taxi cab.

The crash happened about 3 p.m. on Devon Avenue between Milwaukee and Caldwell avenues near the Caldwell Woods Forest Preserve.

The entire rear portion of a silver car was ripped off and flew into the forest preserve.  The cab, from American United Taxi, burst into flames.

One person, an adult female, was ejected from the silver car and was dead at the scene.  Her identity has not been publicly released pending notification of family members.

Two others were taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. Their conditions were immediately reported to be critical, but officials later said the people were doing well and were expected to be released Thursday evening.

One neighbor said he's not surprised that an accident would happen on that stretch of road.

"I've seen it happen where people will pass each other up.  I've seen it congested," said Roger Plano, who lives nearby.  "It's almost like a speed zone, you know.  It's like a race track.  And the younger drivers treat it that way."
