Bystander, Police Help Rescue Children From Lake Michigan

Chicago police and fire divers were called to rescue five children from Lake Michigan on Friday night, and a bystander also jumped into action to help in the rescue.

Of the five children, three were rescued almost immediately. A fourth, a teen girl, was still in the water when Lovera sprang into action, helping authorities get her back to shore.

"The water was getting really rough, I was getting really tired, and the water was beating us all up," Nelson Lovera said. "She was struggling, so I assisted her and waited for her until she was safe."

That girl, who has not yet been identified, was taken to an area hospital in good condition.

Unfortunately, one of the children, a 13-year-old girl, was taken to an area hospital in extremely critical condition after she was pulled from the water several blocks away from the beach.
