Butts Ban Not a Drag for Business

Advocates say year-old smoking ban has little impact on bars

Some bar owners say they've survived the state's year-old smoking ban and even thrived since the ban.

Organizations that pushed for the ban say the first year has been a success.

Last January, a state measure outlawed smoking in public places and within 15 feet of their exterior doors and windows.

People and establishments that violate the law face fines of up to $250.

From the beginning, bars and casinos complained they would be hurt and some have said they've lost revenue.

But others like Toby Herges disagree. He says his Tumble Inn bar in Champaign picked up customers when he added a heated outdoor smoking area.
