A dog was stabbed and killed during a burglary on Chicago's West Side Wednesday night, according to police.
The incident occurred at around 9:45 p.m. in the 2300 block of West Maypole Avenue in the city's West Town neighborhood, Chicago police said.
Officers responded to a burglary to find a male offender inside the residence, authorities said.
He had entered the building by breaking a second flood rear window, officials said. Once inside, he was confronted by a dog that he then fatally stabbed, according to police.
The dog's owner, Joseph Sneed, told the Chicago Tribune he knew something was wrong when he entered his home and saw a piece of luggage out of place. That's when he walked inside and found his 12-year-old pit bull Carmela dead in the hallway with multiple stab wuonds.
“I’ve had her since she was a baby,” Sneed told the publication.
He added that authorities found the man sleeping in a bed on the second floor.
