An off-duty Chicago Police officer shot and killed a man he says tried to break into his Grand Crossings home Monday night.
At about 6:40 p.m. a man identified as Darryl Ellis, 44, tried to break into a home on the 7500 block of South Champlain Avenue that was owned by the officer. The officer heard noises on his first floor and went to investigate. He discovered Ellis holding a tire iron, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The officer identified himself as a Chicago Police Officer but the intruder still acted aggressively towards him, attempting to hit him.
The police officer shot the man several times.
The would be robber was taken in critical condition to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he later died of a gun shot wound.
The Independent Police Review Authority is investigating.
