Bullet Found in Room at Second Northwest Indiana School

No other bullets or weapons were found after a search of the school

For the second time this week, a school in Northwest Indiana was placed on lockdown after a bullet was found in one of the rooms.

At about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday, a student at South Central High School, a K-12 school in Union Mills, found a bullet in the girls locker room, officials at the La Porte County sheriff's office said. The student turned the bullet in to a staff member, and the school was immediately placed on lockdown.

Police then conducted a search of every student locker and the physical education lockers, but no other bullets or weapons were found. The bullet in question is described as .22 caliber ammunition.

This is the second time this week that a bullet was found at a school in La Porte County. The first incident happened Tuesday at New Prairie High School. In both incidents, the schools were searched, but police did not find anything suspicious.

"We have seen this happen far too often in La Porte County schools," La Porte County Sheriff John Boyd said. "In addition to causing a substantial disruption to the school day, this adversely affects Sheriff's Office operations."

The sheriff's office encourages anyone with information about either incident to call their office at (219) 326-7700 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 342-STOP (7767).
