10 Students Injured When School Buses Collide at Brookfield Zoo

Ten students were taken to hospitals following an accident involving two school buses in the parking lot of Brookfield Zoo in the western suburbs Tuesday afternoon.

The accident occurred about 1:13 p.m. in the zoo’s main parking lot at 31st Street and 1st Avenue in Brookfield, according to a statement from the zoo.

"A total of 10 students were transported to local medical facilities," the statement said.

A zoo spokeswoman would not comment on the severity of the injuries, saying the students were being assessed at Loyola University Medical Center.

The zoo’s on-site ambulance and crews from several local municipalities coordinated the transport of passengers, the statement said.

The zoo spokeswoman would not disclose the schools involved, saying administrators had requested time to contact parents of the students involved first.

The accident site has since been cleared and the North Gate parking lot remained accessible, according to the zoo.
