Family and friends of a 55-year-old man shot and killed early Wednesday say they can't figure out why the killer struck.
Bai Wei Wang emigrated to America from China about 25 years ago and owned a construction business. He was killed by a single gunshot as he parked his car in the 3000 block of South Haynes Court, police said.
"The police say it's a robbery, but for us it's hard to believe. They didn't take any money. They didn't take nothing. He had a lot of money in his pocket," said Betty Wang, a family friend.
Neighbors said it was about 12:40 a.m. when the gunfire erupted.
"I heard a gunshot out here and I came running out here to see what was going on and their garage door was open," said a woman named Cheryl who declined to give her last name.
Neighbors told police they went over to the car and found Wang unresponsive in the driver’s seat. Paramedics took Wang to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County where he later died.
Witnesses saw a dark-colored van heading out of the alley at a high rate of speed, said police spokesman John Mirabelli.
Wang's wife and three adult children were too distraught to speak to the media on Wednesday.
