Fall Bridge Lifts Begin Saturday

Lifts allow boats to travel from Lake Michigan harbors to winter storage

The summer really is over, isn't it?

In another sign of the changing season, Chicago's Department of Transportation on Thursday announced that bridge lifts will begin this Saturday to allow boats to travel from Lake Michigan harbors to winter storage.

Movable bridges along the South and Main branches of the Chicago River will be raised on Saturdays and Wednesdays beginning Sept. 17 and throughout November.

Lifts proceed along the Main Branch from Lake Shore Drive west to Franklin/Orleans, then south on the South Branch.

Saturday lifts begin at 9 a.m. while Wednesday lifts start at 9:30 a.m., the release said.

During the runs, bridges are raised sequentially, typically one at a time. Each lift takes between eight to 12 minutes.
