Brewers Fan Receives Heart From a Cubs Fan, Meets Donor's Family

Three months after his surgery, Tom Schroeder wrote to his donor's family

A Brewers fan and the family of his heart transplant donor, who happened to be a Cubs fans, met for the first time at Saturday night's Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers game.

In Aug. 2018, Tom Schroeder underwent a heart transplant at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center after spending 50 days in the hospital, according to a news release from Aurora Advocate Health.

Schroeder received the heart of 32-year-old Joshua Holland. Three months after his surgery, Schroeder wrote a letter to Holland's family.

One month later, he received a letter back from Holland’s mother, Melanie Cook who told Schroeder about her son, including that he was a Cubs fan.

The rivalry was put aside at Milwaukee's Miller Park on Saturday night when Schroeder and Holland's niece, Jerzie Wilkerson, threw out the first pitches.

The doctor who performed Schroeder's surgery, Dr. Eric Weiss, was also on hand for the emotional meeting.
