A 15-year-old boy was critically wounded after being shot while walking to school on Chicago's South Side Wednesday morning.

The boy, identified by family as JaShawn Spencer,  was on the sidewalk at 8:34 a.m. when he was shot multiple times in the 9000 block of South Brandon Avenue, according to Chicago police.

He was taken in critical condition to Comer Children’s Hospital, police said.

"He was a little kid, just a little boy going to school. It's so sad," a witness said.

According to neighbors, two men were seen running from the scene after the shooting.

"They ran through the alley, and some car was waiting for them," a witness said.

Police in the city's 4th District are asking the community for help in locating the shooters responsible.

"Any witnesses on the block, any neighbors, any people with Ring cameras: any help will be instrumental in solving this case," CPD Captain Terry McMahon said.
