As Borders begins to liquidate merchandise Saturday at 16 locations in the Chicago area, efforts to keep local stores open are growing, especially in Chicago's Beverly community.
But members of an ad hoc group in Beverly aren't letting their location of the books-and-music chain go so easily. The group launched a Facebook page requesting Borders keep the location at 2210 W. 95th St. open, claiming it's the "anchor of the community."
More than 700 people joined a different Facebook group started by the Beverly Area Planning Association, called Keep the Beverly Borders Bookstore Open, The Southtown Star reports
Borders sent a "store closing" flier via email to customers of the Beverly location announcing 20 - 40 percent off of everything in the store beginning Saturday. "Everything must go," the flier announced.
“People here like to read. Our 2009 housing survey found that 90 percent of homebuyers had a bachelor’s degree or more,” Matt Walsh, executive director of the Beverly Area Planning Association said.
