Christmas Day

Body Found in Pool is Missing Waukegan Teen: Coroner

A body found in a swimming pool behind a home in a quiet suburban neighborhood has been identified as a missing Waukegan teen who disappeared on Christmas Day, the Lake County Coroner's office said Wednesday.

The body was identified as 18-year-old Lucio Cambray, officials said.

Waukegan police confirmed Monday they found Cambray's body in a swimming pool behind a home where a fatal fire had broke out last month.

An 18-year-old woman died Dec. 4 in the basement of the home in the 1300 block of North Jackson in Waukegan. The woman was reportedly staying in an illegal apartment in the home's basement where the fire started. The Lake County News-Sun reported at the time the cause of the fire was unknown but it started in a couch.

It remains unclear if in fact Cambray knew the woman killed in the fire.

More than 50 people organized a search for him on Sunday but he was not found. Hours later, Waukegan police detectives discovered the body in the pool.

"The human body was located outside, in the elements," authorities said.

A cause of death was not immediately released.

Extracting the body from the frozen pool was difficult, authorities said. An official autopsy will be done Friday after being delayed so the body could thaw.

"We will release preliminary autopsy results as soon as we are able,” Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper said in a statement. “Notification was made to his family last night and our deepest condolences go out to them. This is an awful tragedy for his family and the community."

"Just come forward and say what they did or didn’t do. I just want my brother to rest in peace," Cambray's sister, Odalis Cambray, said during a press conference Wednesday.

His family created a GoFundMe account to cover the cost of sending his body to Mexico "so both his parents can see him one last time."
