Blackhawks Still Looking for Defensive Help as Sekera is Dealt

The Chicago Blackhawks have been in the market for a defenseman in recent weeks as the NHL trade deadline approaches, but a player who was potentially their biggest target is now off the board as Andrej Sekera has been traded to the Los Angeles Kings.

Sekera, who was an alternate captain for the Carolina Hurricanes, was a highly-sought after rental player, with the Blackhawks and Kings both in hot pursuit of his services.

The Kings ultimately won out, sending a first round draft pick (it goes to Carolina this year if the Kings make the postseason, and next year if they don’t), and prospect Roland McKeown to Raleigh in exchange for Sekera.

The Blackhawks have been looking for blue line help with the recent struggles of Johnny Oduya (who is currently dealing with an injury and out of the Hawks’ lineup) and Michal Rozsival, and losing out on Sekera is a tough pill to swallow for the team.

Getting Trevor van Riemsdyk back will be nice, but adding a veteran piece as a short-term rental would have really bolstered the team’s defensive corps.

There are still a couple of defensemen available on the market that could be on the Hawks’ wish list.

Scott Hannan’s name has been one of the main names mentioned, and others like Jeff Petry could also be on Chicago’s radar.
