The matchup against the Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues may be viewed by most hockey fans as the first true “rivalry” to be featured on NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Rivalry series this season (after all, when have the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings really been rivals?), but the network isn’t just settling for that fact to sell the game.
In fact, NBCSN will debut a new series on Tuesday night at 9:30 p.m. Central time called NHL Rivals. Steve Lepore of SB Nation has the story:
“It’ll air after the network’s broadast of the Buffalo-Tampa Bay matchup, and then re-air on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. E.T. Basically, the episode that week will be centered around the Wednesday Night Rivalry matchup set to air. The opening episode will center around the rivalry between the Blackhawks and Blues prior to their showdown on NBCSN Oct. 10th.”
Obviously, most of the focus in the series’ opening episode will be on the history of the Blues-Blackhawks rivalry, and one of the more notable occurrences in the series was the massive brawl that occurred on March 17th, 1991 and is now known as the “St. Patrick’s Day Massacre.” Pat Foley has the call:
The two teams also had a wonderful donnybrook on Oct. 21, 1995, and that brawl involved various legendary players like Bob Probert, Al MacInnis, Jeremy Roenick, and Chris Pronger. Foley again with the commentary:
