Charges were pending Wednesday against a man who authorities say caused a fiery crash involving three vehicles that closed a part of Interstate 94 -- the Bishop Ford Freeway -- earlier in the morning.
An Illinois State Police official said speed and alcohol played a factor in the crash on the Bishop Ford Freeway near Sibley Boulevard just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Illinois State Police Sgt. Mike Dolis said a vehicle traveling southbound hit an SUV, causing it to rollover and catch fire. The driver of the SUV, a man in his 60s, was ejected from the impact and landed in the grass off the roadway. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with head trauma and burns to his arms.
After clipping the SUV, the first vehicle struck a second vehicle, Dolis said. The driver of the first vehicle, a 28-year-old man, was arrested.
All southbound lanes of Interstate 94 near the crash were closed but reopened to traffic by 3 a.m. Wednesday.
