House Explosion, Massive Outage Make for Bad Week for Peoples Gas

Dual incidents are about a mile apart on Chicago's South Side

It's been a rough week for People's Gas.

Crews from the gas company restored service Thursday morning to more than 90 homes in Chicago's South Side Beverly neighborhood after a main was damaged a day earlier, but some residents of nearby Morgan Park were told they would be without gas for a second time this week.

Workers from a third-party contractor were on the 2100 block of West 107th Place in Morgan Park on Tuesday when a ruptured gas line ignited and caused a home to explode. Crews were back out Thursday morning continuing repairs.

Just before 4 p.m., the company said it had made the repairs and was restoring service and re-lighting appliances.

"We apologize for this inconvenience, but it is necessary to ensure the safety of our customers and our employees," Peoples Gas said in a statement.

In Beverly, gas service to nearly 100 homes near the 10000 block of South Prospect Avenue was lost Wednesday afternoon when a contractor crew damaged a gas line during an ongoing utility upgrade project.

That meant a cold night for residents. One woman said the temperature in her home dipped to about 60 degrees before she went to bed.

"My husband just went to get a heater, and we're going to bundle up in some blankets and just hope for the best," said homeowner Tracy Jerdine.
