Ben Zobrist Strikes Out Yadier Molina in 1st-Ever Pitching Appearance

Zobrist had never pitched in a game until Sunday, throwing a scoreless inning

If Sunday was the final appearance of Ben Zobrist’s Chicago Cubs career, he certainly made it a memorable one.

Zobrist, whose four-year contract with the Cubs ends this season, has long been known for his versatility, but there is one thing that he had never done in his big league career: pitched in a game.

That all changed on Sunday as he pitched the eighth inning against the Cardinals. Despite giving up two walks, he did manage to throw a scoreless frame, striking out Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina to end the inning:

It is unclear whether Zobrist will continue playing baseball beyond the 2019 season. He missed most of the season on the restricted list, but came back for the month of September with the Cubs. He is set to become a free agent after the conclusion of the World Series, and remains undecided on whether he will continue to play.
