A single mother of three received a huge holiday surprise this week.
Dineyshka Pinela, who fled Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria, moved to Chicago and became homeless. Pinela said she remembers walking with her kids until 10:30 p.m. one night, begging people for place to stay.
After several months, she found affordable housing but couldn't afford to furnish it.
Enter Humble Design, a Chicago non-profit that transforms homes for families transitioning into housing. "There is really no reason these families should be sleeping on the floor."
Humble Design met with Pinela for a quick interview to find out what her family likes. The company then went back to their warehouse of donated items, and in just five hours they cleaned, refurbished and organized the entire home, even putting up a Christmas tree.
Pinela burst into tears when she saw her home, calling it a gift from heaven for her family.
