Bears Hire Vic Fangio as Defensive Coordinator

New Bears coach John Fox isn’t wasting any time getting his staff together since being hired by the team Friday. Just one day after he was introduced to the media, the team hired Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator.

Citing an NFL source, the Chicago Sun-Times confirmed the move, which was first reported by CBS Sports, noting that Mel Tucker was reportedly informed early on that he would not be returning. The Chicago Bears announced that the team reached an agreement with Fangio Tuesday afternoon.

Fangio spent the last four years as defensive coordinator for the 49ers, whose defense ranked among the top in the NFL during his time.

In those four seasons, the 49ers were second in the NFL in scoring defense, third in total defense, and fourth in takeaways.

Before the 49ers, Fangio was a special assistant to the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens and spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Houston Texans. He also served as defensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts and Carolina Panthers.

John Fox was introduced Monday as the Chicago Bears new head coach. Fans had a lot to say about the new hire.

Fox remained non-committal Monday when asked about his course of action for the team’s staffing needs, though he’d already replaced Joe DeCamillis with Jeff Rodgers as special teams coordinator and hired Josh Lucas as director of player personnel.
