Bears Sign Receiver, Kick Returner Eric Weems

The Chicago Bears continue their busy free agency by signing Pro Bowl wide receiver and kick returner Eric Weems to a three-year contract. He will provide a boost to Chicago's special teams and offensive units.

In four seasons with Atlanta, Weems had 24 catches for 205 yards. More importantly, he had more than 3,700 kick and punt return yards. Special teams coordinator Dave Toub should be happy as he can use both Weems and Devin Hester on returns. Hester is the best returner of all-time but now will not have to field every return.

In the past, Johnny Knox would also return punts and kicks, but his back was badly injured near the end of the 2011 season. His status for 2012 is still uncertain. The Bears signing Weems suggests they are preparing for Knox not to play in 2012.

With or without Knox, the Bears' receiving corp already has a different look for the 2012 season. With Marshall and Weems on-board, Chicago has two yard-gaining weapons.
