Chicago Bears Hire Marc Trestman As New Coach

The Bears have hired Marc Trestman as their head coach. Trestman was chosen over Darrell Bevell and Bruce Arians. For the past four years, he has served as the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League.

The Bears made the announcement just after 4 a.m.

Trestman had back-to-back championships with the Alouettes, which likely played into the Bears' decision to hire him. Before the CFL, Trestman was offensive coordinator at North Carolina State and a long career with the NFL. More than anything, Trestman is viewed as a quarterback guru who brings out the best in signal callers. Bernie Kosar, Rich Gannon and Steve Young flourished underneath Trestman's tutelage.

It makes sense the Bears would seek Trestman out after the Bears offense stalled in the past few seasons. Even with Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall, the Bears struggled to get first downs and score when needed. They were ranked in the bottom five of the NFL in 2012 for yardage gained, and converted on 36.5 percent of third downs.

Trestman's task will be to build on the 10-6 season the Bears had in 2012. He will have heavy expectations waiting for him in Chicago.
