High Winds Prompt Beach Hazard Advisory for Chicago Area

High winds prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Beach Hazard Advisory Wednesday morning that will remain in effect until late Thursday.

Powerful waves and strong rip currents are expected to create dangerous swimming conditions at Chicago-area beaches, according to the warning.

Wind gusts as strong as 25 mph could make for waves along Lake Michigan to reach up to 6 feet tall, NWS reports.

People visiting the beaches should stay out of the water and away from piers near the shoreline, the weather service said, as structural currents could sweep passerby out into deeper water.
