A 1-year-old girl was the unintended recipient of a bullet fired off during an argument between two men on the South Side, police said.
The girl, Akira Vickers, was in a stroller when she was shot in the shoulder early Monday in the city's Grand Crossing Park neighborhood. The shooting occurred at 12:06 a.m. in a park in the 7600 block of South Dobson Avenue, according to Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines.
She was with her mother, who tried to keep the girl safe as her boyfriend and ex-boyfriend got into an argument. Shots were fired by the former boyfriend, according to police.
The baby girl was driven to Jackson Park Hospital. She was then transferred to Chicago Comer Children's Hospital where she had surgery on her jaw and shoulder.
"I'm just glad my baby's still alive," the girl's grandmother, Leola Travis, said Monday morning, according to the Chicago Tribune.
No one is in custody and no description of the suspect was immediately available.
