Authorities Identify Chicago Man Killed in Fireworks Accident

Authorities have identified the man killed in a fireworks accident in Chicago Monday night.

The Cook County medical examiner's office identified the victim as 53-year-old Juan Acevedo.

Acevedo, of the 3900 block of West 85th Street in the city's Ashburn neighborhood, was in an accident involving fireworks just before 4 p.m. in that same block, according to Chicago police.

Officers responding to a report of an explosion in the area discovered the man "unresponsive with a head injury," Chicago police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Further details on what exactly happened weren't immediately known, but surveillance video showed the man lighting a firework in a yard at the scene.

The man is seen in the video walking away from the firework then returning to see why it did not go off. As he hovers over the firework, it goes off.

It was not immediately clear what kind of firework caused the tragedy. Bomb and arson units were called to the scene, police said.

An investigation into the incident remained ongoing.
