Authorities Identify Man Found Dead After South Side Blaze

Danny Newell, 65, died from smoke and soot inhalation

A man who was found dead after a South Side house fire last week has been identified.

The blaze began in a single-family home in Calumet Heights at about 1:30 p.m. Jan. 7 in the 9100 block of South Crandon, police said.

Danny Newell, 65, was found dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found Newell died of smoke and soot inhalation from the fire. His death was ruled an accident.

The man was the only person in the home, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford. A person who lives at the house was not home at the time of the fire, which did not appear suspicious.

It wasn’t known Sunday if Newell lived at the home.
