Authorities Confirm Missing Chicago Nurse Found Dead In Hawaii River

A body recovered Feb. 25 in Hawaii’s Wailuku River was confirmed to be that of Kelly Mrowinski, a Chicago nurse who had been missing since January.

Mrowinski, 28, was walking along the river with a co-worker when a flash flood swept them both into the water. The co-worker swam to safety, but lost track of Mrowinski.

Officials told local outlet Hawaii News Now that the body was located in a cave-like structure Feb. 24 but they were unable to recover it until the next day.

The medical examiner confirmed Mrowinski’s cause of death was “freshwater drowning” and ruled that her death was accidental, Hawaii police said in a Thursday press release.
