Aurora Man Fatally Struck by Train in Downers Grove

The man walked between the center tracks and was struck by the train

A man was fatally struck by a train Saturday night in west suburban Downers Grove.

At about 9:40 p.m., the man walked around the south crossing gates Main Street as a stopped Metra train waited for passengers, according to a statement from Downers Grove police.

He walked between the center tracks toward Forest Avenue and was struck by a westbound BNSF freight train, police said.

James G. Hill, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Witnesses to the crash told police that the crossing gates were down and functioning properly.

BNSF spokesman Andy Williams said the freight train was en route to Galesburg from Chicago.

Metra trains were halted near the Downers Grove station for about an hour after the crash, according to the transit agency’s website.
