A young boy was struck and seriously injured Wednesday in a hit-and-run crash in Aurora, and the search is on to find the person behind the wheel.
Police said 13-year-old Joshua Romero of the 400 block of Grant Place was crossing the street on his bike on Talma Street at 5th Avenue when he was hit by a vehicle headed eastbound. He was not wearing a helmet.
The car, described as a newer model dark-colored Nissan Pathfinder, apparently slowed down but then continued on 5th to Jackson Street, police said. Witnesses recall seeing a female driver.
"If she has any kind of anything in her heart she would turn herself in," the boy's mother, Erica Lopez, said Thursday. "This is my child. If it was any child, you can't do that. ... She didn't know if he was OK."
The boy was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center and then airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center with serious head trauma. He has a fractured skull, facial injuries, and a broken arm.
