The ATF is investigating after an agent was shot during an operation in northwest Indiana on Thursday.

The agency confirmed the shooting on its Twitter feed, saying that the Chicago Field Division was responding to the incident in Gary.

The Chicago Police Department tweeted the agent who was shot was "critically wounded."

"ATF Agents are working with us every hour of every day to reduce gun violence in Chicago and it's beyond a partnership, it's one team, one fight," the tweet read.

Law enforcement sources tell NBC 5 that the agent's injuries are non-life threatening and his condition has stabilized. The agent was brought to Methodist Hospitals in Gary, according to officials.

A police presence was reported at multiple locations, sources tell NBC 5. A suspect was shot and killed at that intersection, sources say.

According to Indiana State Police, a white Kia Optima fled the scene of a traffic stop at 7th and Tennessee in Gary around noon on Thursday. The vehicle was pursued by officers, and slammed into two other vehicles at the intersection of 21st Avenue and Broadway.

Police acknowledged that there were reports that the police chase was connected to the shooting of the ATF agent, but did not confirm the information.

Numerous ambulances were called to the scene, which was being investigated by the Lake County Sheriff's Office in Indiana.
