Arrest Made in Hit and Run Death of 5-Year-Old Girl

Witnesses described the vehicle as a black or dark grey SUV, possibly containing a spare tire mounted to the back, authorities said

Police say that an arrest has been made in the case of a 5-year-old girl that was struck and killed by a vehicle on Tuesday evening.

According to Michigan City police, 35-year-old Marcus R. Scully came forward to provide information on the incident. After interviewing with police, Scully was arrested and transported to LaPorte County Jail, where he is being held on $15,000 bond, according to authorities.

"It is hoped that the suspect's decision to follow his conscience and cooperate with this investigation will help the victim's family find closure and peace for the tragic loss of their family member," Michigan City police said in a statement.

Delaney Klewer was walking with her sister just before 6 p.m. in the 300 block of Broadway Street in Michigan City when a vehicle traveling westbound on the road struck her and fled the scene, police said.

Klewer was taken to St. Anthony Hospital by LaPorte County first responders but ultimately died of her injuries.

"When she got hit I was so sad," Delaney's sister Sarah said. "I tried to wake her up but she didn't. He didn't stop."

Police also said that another individual is being investigated for allegedly providing intentionally false and misleading information, which hindered the investigation into the incident.

The family has started a GoFundMe page to raise funds for a reward for information leading to an arrest.
