Armed Man Shot by Police in Oswego

A man armed with a rifle was shot by Oswego police officers early Saturday in the western suburb.

Police received a call at 12:16 a.m. from a man saying that there would be a “massacre” in the suburbs and that he would shoot himself in the street, according to a statement from Oswego police. The call was then disconnected.

When authorities called back and offered to send someone to talk to the man, he said he would shoot them as well, police said.

Dispatchers were able to determine the caller’s location, and officers from the Oswego, Montgomery and Aurora police departments and the Kane and Kendall county sheriff’s offices were dispatched to the 0-100 block of Ashlawn Avenue at 12:18 a.m., according to police.

When officers arrived, they found a 24-year-old man armed with a rifle standing outside a home, police said. The man raised the rifle at the officers, and when he did not comply with the officers’ orders they fired at him, striking him in the torso.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery and was in recovery as of Saturday morning, police said.

One of the officers involved in the shooting is an 18-year veteran of the Oswego Police Department, and the other is a nine-year veteran, police said. They were not injured, but taken to the hospital for examination.
