Anthony Rizzo Wins MLB's Roberto Clemente Award

Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo has accomplished a lot on the baseball field, but on Friday he was honored for his work away from the ballpark.

On Friday, Rizzo was named as the winner of the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award, given to the player that best embodies “sportsmanship, community involvement, and positive contributions on and off the field.”

"Incredibly honored and humbled to receive the Roberto Clemente Award," Rizzo said on his Twitter account. "This award means more to my family and I than I could ever express."

Rizzo was presented the award at Minute Maid Park in Houston before Game 3 of the World Series between the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers.

"(It's) a well-deserved recognition of his noble efforts to raise money and provide suport to children and families battling cancer," Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement.

This year, Rizzo stepped up his charitable game in a big way, committing $3.5 million to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago. He also donated $250,000 to the University of Miami Health System, where he received treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Rizzo also makes regular appearances at Lurie, signing autographs and taking photos with patients at the facility.
