Police say carjackers are using a familiar ruse on Chicago's North Side.
A car behind drives right into the rear bumper of the victim, police say, then when the driver in front gets out, police say two men emerge from the car behind--sometimes in ski masks--pull weapons and commandeer the car they hit.
Similar incidents have happened just after midnight Monday in Lakeview on the 800 block of West George Street and two more Tuesday night within 30 minutes of each other in Roscoe Village on the 2500 block of North Bosworth and Ravenswood avenues and on the 2100 block of West Belle Plaine Avenue. Two people were carjacked Monday in Andersonville on the quiet 1700 block of West Farragut Avenue shortly after 1 p.m.
An off-duty police officer, who didn’t want to be identified, in one of the neighborhoods where the bump-and-run carjackings have happened told NBC 5 just what he'd do in such a situation.
“If someone comes at you with a weapon give them what they want," he said. "There’s no reason to get into an altercation where your life could be in jeopardy."
“Your car can be replaced," he added. "Your life can’t be replaced."
