Alleged Drunk Driver Hits Roadway Worker

An alleged drunken driver struck a roadway worker in a two-vehicle crash on the Eisenhower Expressway early Friday near west suburban Bellwood, State Police said.

A vehicle traveling west on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) struck a work vehicle just east of Mannheim Road about 1:30 a.m., Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Joe Stangl said.

The work vehicle was parked on the shoulder and the male worker was about to set up signs when the accident happened, Stangl said.

The worker and motorist, also a man, were taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with non-life-threatening injuries, Stangl said.

State Police said Friday morning the 27-year-old motorist will be charged with a DUI, but no formal charges have been filed early Friday.

The drunken driver could also face an additional penalty for striking a roadway worker, which would fall under Scott's Law, State Police said.

Illinois State Police District Chicago is investigating.
