Tracks Reopen After BNSF Trains Halted for Mechanical Issue

Inbound and outbound trains on Metra's BNSF Railway were halted in suburban Clarendon Hills during rush hour Monday morning after a mechanical issue was reported on a train headed to Chicago.

BNSF train no. 1232 was scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 7:49 a.m. but the train experienced a “mechanical problem” that prompted assistance from police and fire departments, Metra said in a service alert.

A Metra spokesperson said there was smoke coming from the engine.

No injuries were reported in the incident and passengers were waiting for another train, the spokesperson said.

Trains were delayed 15 to 80 minutes, according to the alert.

The tracks reopened near Clarendon Hills and West Hinsdale just before 9:20 a.m., Metra said. Delays of 30 minutes or more were reported.
