Man Who Prompted Addison School Lockdown Dies

Neighbors reported hearing several rounds of gunfire beginning at about 6 p.m.

A man involved in a hit-and-run crash prompted the brief lockdown of a west suburban high school Monday evening after he exchanged gunfire with officers, police said.

George R. Scoville was struck by police gunfire, placed in custody and transported to an area hospital, police chief Tim Hayden said. The DuPage County Sheriff's Office confirmed Tuesday Scoville later died.

The sheriff's department said Addison Police responded to a hit-and-run around and encountered an armed man who began firing shots. Police said Scoville retreated back into his house, and nearby residences were evacuated.

Nearby Addison Trail High School, at 213 N. Lombard Rd. in Addison, was locked down briefly during a sign-up session for a basketball camp after police said a resident in the area fired shots toward the school.

Police said Scoville again exited the house and fired numbers times at officers. Police returned fire and struck him.

Neighbors reported hearing several rounds of gunfire beginning at about 6 p.m. Witnesses reported hearing several shots in succession at about 9 p.m.

Addison Trail High School was later evacuated without any of the students or parents inside being injured, a school official said.

Two Addison schools a week ago were locked down after it was reported that a girl had been found restrained in a bathroom and that an intruder was inside a middle school. Police later said a female student made up the story.
