Add a Few Pounds, Lose a Few Years

Your life expectancy may drop up to 10 years if you're 150 pounds or more overweight, according to a University of Oxford study.

People who are 50 or more pounds overweight shorten their lifespan by about three years.

The study measured the body mass index (BMI) of about 900,000 people. BMI compares body fat and height. Those with a BMI of 25 are considered overweight, 30 or more is obese.

More than one-third of Americans are overweight, according to researchers.
