Woman Critically Hurt in Lake View Hit-and-Run

A woman was critically hurt in an early Sunday hit-and-run in the Lake View neighborhood.

The woman in her 30's was struck about 11:50 p.m. in the 1000 block of West Byron Street, police said.

The sport-utility vehicle did not stop and detectives are investigating the crash as a hit-and-run, police said. Police have not yet determined a color, make or model of the vehicle, but a witness gave NBC Chicago details of what he saw.

"A white SUV, I think a Honda four-door, came around the corner at a high rate of speed.  I'd say about 35 to 40 miles per hour, and struck her, pushing her up into the air and slamming her into the back of the vehicle there," witness John Drennan said.

The woman was initially taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, police said.

Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
